Hant's Harbour Today

The municipality of Hant 's Harbour [incorporated in 1970] is located on Route 80 between Winterton and New Chelsea. The settlement is built around a harbour which is able to accommodate vessels up to 100 tons. The first crab plant in Newfoundland and Labrador was opened in Hant's Harbour in 1967. Today, the town has a large seafood processing plant that employs many people in town and in the surrounding communities. The town population is 401 according to the 2006 census.

Long History

Hant's Harbour has been involved in the fishery since its beginnings in the early 17th century. In order to find out more about the past of the community, the Baccalieu Trail Heritage Corporation conducted a preliminary dig in the town. They found almost 500 artifacts in one day. In May of 2007, among the artifacts recovered were the bases of two German manufactured stoneware Bellarmine bottles.
