The Look Out Photo: N. Ayad
It is primarily a farming area and known for its landmark life-sized, weather-vane horse statue atop a cliff, known locally as "The Look Out". (The weather-vane horse is privately owned, and is located on a private farm, where trespassing is not permitted. It can be photographed from Route 70, as in the photo above.)
Besides the small year-round resident population, it is a popular cottage area, built up along the shores of the many lakes and ponds.
The home of Joey Smallwood (1900-1991), who led Newfoundland into confederation with Canada, is located on Roaches Line. He became the first premier of Newfoundland when it became a province in Canadian Confederation in 1949 and remained in that position for 23 years. His home is not open for public viewing.
